How to paste formatted text into Slack
- Write or paste your text in the editor, or drop a
.mdfile on the page. - Click Copy for Slack.
- Paste into Slack's message box. Bold, italics, lists, links and code arrive formatted — Slack keeps the formatting of pasted rich text.
Two ways Slack formats text
The formatting toolbar is Slack's default: what you paste keeps its formatting, which is exactly what Copy for Slack gives you.
Markup is optional (Preferences → Advanced → Format messages with markup). You type marks, and Slack applies them when the message is sent:
| Type this | To get |
|---|---|
*bold* | bold — one asterisk, not two |
_italic_ | italic |
~strike~ | |
`code` | inline code |
| three backticks | a code block |
> quote | a quoted line |
[text](https://…) | a link on the words |
In markup mode, lists are not formatted automatically.
What changes on the way to Slack
Slack messages are simpler than documents, so Lumidown adapts yours:
- Your
#headings arrive as bold lines — Slack keeps real headings for canvases. - A Markdown table arrives as a monospace block with lined-up columns.
- Pictures saved in Lumidown stay behind: drag them into Slack yourself.
- Equations and Mermaid charts arrive as code.
- Task checkboxes turn into ☐ / ☑ symbols.
Tips for team updates in Slack
- Keep the first line short and clear: it is what people see in notifications and in the channel list.
- Put the details in a thread under a short message, rather than one very long post.
- Emoji shortcodes like
:tada:work in Slack, and in Lumidown's editor too. - Mention people in Slack itself:
@nametyped here stays plain text when pasted.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't **bold** work in Slack?
Slack uses one asterisk for bold: *bold*. Two asterisks stay as typed. Copy for Slack sends real bold text, so you don't have to think about it.
How do I make a table in Slack?
Slack messages have no tables. Copy for Slack turns a Markdown table into a monospace block with aligned columns.
Can Slack messages have headings?
No — headings exist in Slack canvases, not in messages. Copy for Slack turns them into bold lines.
How do I paste Markdown into Slack?
Paste it here, click Copy for Slack, then paste into Slack. Pasting raw Markdown straight into Slack shows the symbols instead of the formatting.
Is my text uploaded?
No. It is converted in your browser.
