How to paste formatted Markdown into Teams
- Write or paste your Markdown in the editor — notes, a document, an AI answer — or drop a
.mdfile on the page. - Click Copy for Teams.
- Paste into the Teams message box. Headings, lists, tables, links, code and pictures arrive formatted.
Why pasting Markdown into Teams doesn't work
Teams formats Markdown only as you type it. Pasted Markdown stays as raw # and * symbols. Copy for Teams puts rich text on your clipboard instead — the form Teams keeps when you paste.
Typing Markdown in Teams
| Type this | To get |
|---|---|
*bold* | bold |
_italic_ | italic |
~strike~ | |
# , ## , ### | headings (three levels) |
- or 1. | lists |
> | a quote |
`code` and three backticks | code |
What Lumidown takes care of
- Headings below level 3 become bold — Teams has three levels.
- Checkboxes become ☐ and ☑, which survive pasting.
- Code indentation is protected: Teams strips leading spaces from pasted code.
- Diagrams arrive as pictures; formulas as code.
- Long messages: Teams takes about 28 KB per message, formatting included — Lumidown warns you when it's more.
When to send a file instead
A long report reads better as a document than as a wall of chat:
- Export → Word, then attach the
.docxto the chat or upload it to the channel's Files tab, where colleagues can open it in Word or co-edit it online. - Export → PDF for something people should read but not change.
- Keep the Teams message itself to a short summary and the link or file.
Frequently asked questions
Can you paste Markdown into Microsoft Teams?
Not directly: Teams shows pasted Markdown as plain symbols. Paste it here and click Copy for Teams — you then paste formatted text.
Can I put a table in a Teams message?
Yes. Write the table in Markdown and use Copy for Teams: it arrives as a real table.
Why does my code lose its indentation in Teams?
Teams trims spaces at the start of pasted lines. Copy for Teams protects them, so Python and YAML keep their shape.
My message is too long for Teams — what now?
Teams caps a message at about 28 KB including its formatting. Split the document at a heading and send it in parts.
Is my text uploaded?
No. It is converted in your browser.
